Introduction

This project is a response to the question of how to make Toronto a better place to live? As this question can be looked at from various angles, I decided to look at the community connectivity aspect and specifically through the creative industry.

’artRadius’ aims to connect people in Toronto to easily find various types of cultural and art events including independent shows which are not easily advertised to the general population interested in attending. Such independent events held by locals of the city play a huge role in getting to know more about the emerging culture whether you are a person who is just visiting or living there.

Survey

A survey was conducted on 34 people living in Toronto. The aim of the survey was to identify the participant’s lifestyle, schedule, interest in attending art events as well as their awareness of mobile event types that are recently becoming popular around big cities such as Toronto.

Interviews
Several interviews and conversations took place as to understand more about what the community faces in relation to the art and design scene in Toronto. Below are 3 examples of user thoughts that helped in directing the nature of the app.

Help out-of-towners to experience the city through a local lens, so that they learn more about the culture.

Help users with busy schedules to easily locate events, so that they can efficiently organize their schedule to attending events based on direction of their route of travel.

Allow users to communicate their personal interested so that they get relevant suggestions to what they would like to see.

Communicate imagery and graphics to users to help in gauging their interest in an event before attending.

Emerging young artists and makers usually have a hard time penetrating the industry and getting the opportunity to showcase their work. The popularity of short-term events such as pop-up shops and maker showcase markets have increased to help bridge the gap between the population interested in visiting and viewing the work and the artist hosting the events. However, these types of events have a dynamic nature and many people miss out on them for lack of outreach.

App Features + Privatization

After thinking about what the user would need to help utilize artRadius, a list of features was created and then prioritized to help the user in using this tool in the most effective way.

User Flows

The above diagrams show two different cases of user flows for finding an event and adding it to your calendar. In some cases, attending a show could be free of charge, however the user would want to add it to their calendar and set a reminder for a specific day for when they would like to attend.

Future + myRadius

artRadius follows a model that could be implemented to any kind of event interest and not limited to art and culture events only. artRadius, in addition to several types of apps could be under a one umbrella of a ‘myRadius’ brand  that encompasses any type of interest to bring like-minded people in the community together.
