ARTICULATE PERFORMANCE

As part of the Architectural Association School of Architecture-London, AA visiting School Dubai (AAVSDXB) investigated novel means of engaging the public within the site of the Dubai Expo 2020. This pavilion invigorates the space by functioning as a shaded shelter by day and an interactive structure by night, responsive to its environment sound as well as generating animated visual reactions to projections mapped onto it.

This collaboration included advanced design techniques, new materials, digital fabrication, computer programming and electrical circuitry in adjacency to methods of traditional craft and concrete forming.

the team produced a lightweight self-standing tensile membrane structure, which could also be described as a ‘Form-Active Hybrid’ Structure.

The Structure’s performance is articulated through the synergy of the workshop’s four units:
‘Performance as Material’, ‘Performance as Computation’, ‘Performance as Systems’ and ‘Performance as Interaction’.
